Activities 2013-2014

1. At IE Building, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirappalli:
  1. A special lecture on 'IT Journey from 1974 to 2009 in BHEL.' was organized on 9th April 2013. Mr. R. Sandanadurai, Retd. GM/ITS&S, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirappalli was the resource person.
  2. A special lecture on 'Customized Server Dash Board' was organized on 28th May 2013 at the BHEL office in association with the Institution of Engineers Local Centre. Shri A. Anand, Sr. Engineer, Informatics Centre, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchirappalli was the resource person.
  3. On 25th June 2013, Mr. S. Babu Gandhi, Engineer/IT Solutions & Services, Fossil Boilers, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirapalli gave a special lecture on 'Introduction to rendering concepts for media generation from 3D'. The main objective of his lecture was to understand the use of 3D models for generating media for projecting their design to the customers..
  4. Ms. C. Aparna, Associate Professor, Department of CSE, MAM College of Engineering, Tiruchirapalli gave a special lecture on 'Secure Routing for Mobile Adhoc Networks using GNDA' on 9th July 2013. She highlighted on the various issues in providing secure routing in MANETs.
  5. A lecture programme was arranged on the topic 'IP Telephony and its Features' on 13th August 2013 in the Institution of Engineers (IE) Building, BHEL. Shri A. Kalai Selvan, Sr. Engineer, Informatics Centre, BHEL, Tiruchirappalli spoke on the topic.
  6. On 10th September 2013 a lecture programme was conducted on the topic 'Cloud Computing' by Mr. A. Raghunathan, Sr. DGM, Informatic Centre, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirapalli.
  7. A lecture on 'Study on Effect of Process Variables on GTAW Arc Parameters by Imaging Process' was delivered by Dr. Sanjeevi Arul, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Amrita University, Coimbatore on 8th October 2013.
  8. A special lecture was arranged on 'Web Application Security' by Ms. M. J. Divya, Engineer, ITS&S.(FB), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchirappalli on 12th November 2013. In her talk she clearly explained about the various security threats such as Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Denial of Service, Code Execution, and Cross Site Request Forgery.
  9. On 10th December 2013, Shri A. Abdul Khader, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engg., M.A.M. College of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli gave a special lecture on 'Web Technology'.
  10. A lecture programme on 'BackUp and Restoration of File Server Using NetBackUp' was conducted on 21st January 2014. The resource person was Mr. Srinivasa Reddy Bala, Assistant Engineer, ITS&S, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirapalli.
  11. Ms. P. Shanthi, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engg., M.A.M College of Engineering, Tiruchirapalli gave a special lecture on the topic 'Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence' on 11th February 2014.
  12. A lecture on 'Computerization of Boiler Remaining Life Assessment (RLA) Reports' was organized on 11th March 2014. Mr. D. Senthil Kumar D, Dy. Manager / ITS&S, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd., Tiruchirapalli spoke on the topic.

2. At Bharathidasan University Technology Park, Tiruchirappalli:
  1. A Soft Skills Programme was presented by Mr. Stephen, IDEAS International, for MCA and M.Tech. IT students on 23rd July 2013 at BUTP, Tiruchirappalli. In his lecture, the speaker explained the importance of various soft skills and how these skills help in the personality development of the individual.
  2. On 16th August 2013 a Workshop on Ontologies & Web Services was conducted by Dr. Farida Begam, Manipal University, Dubai for MCA and M.Tech. IT students
  3. On 5th September 2013, in the occasion of teacher's day, a sapling plantation ceremony was organized by the CSI, BUTP and CSBDU along with the Students, faculty members of the university. The event was proceeded to gift an individual sapling to each of the faculty members of the department.
  4. On 8th October 2013, a lecture was organized on the Advanced Query Processing among Entomological Databases by Mrs. L . Melita, Research Scholar in CSBDU.
  5. On 15th October 2013, a lecture was delivered on the topic 'Establishment of Reliable, Credible routing protocol with maximum connectivity for wireless sensor networks through secured and aggregated data approach' by Ms. M. P. Anuradha, Research Scholar, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli.
  6. On 23rd October 2013 a Workshop on Google Apps Development for Education was conducted. This workshop is an exclusive and unique event for academia, first time in Tiruchirappalli, for exploring faculty and students to the wide spectrum of Google apps. This is jointly organized by Computer Society of India which is the only professional organization for computer science professionals. Google Apps Development is a Cloud Based Messaging & Collaboration Solution which provides Institute an Enterprise Class platform and Applications.
  7. A state-level workshop on "Advanced Research Concepts in Computer Science using MATLAB" was organized on 18th December 2013 at the BUTP. M.Phil. & Ph.D. research scholars and M.Tech. students from various colleges in Tamil Nadu participated in the workshop. The workshop included lectures, demonstration and hands-on sessions exposing the participants to a few research problems and implementing them using MATLAB
  8. On 30th January 2014, a state-level workshop on 'Android App Development Project' was organized at BUTP. Mr. Subhash E.P, Founder & Head, TechV, Chennai, conducted the workshop. The resource person explained how to start a New Android Project, Add UI and Media Features, Add Application Logic, Debug Application on Emulator, Android Phone or Android Tablet, and Publish. Around 60 students from various colleges in Tamil Nadu participated in the workshop.
  9. On 25th February 2014 an Eye Camp was organized in association with Vasan Eye Care, Tiruchirappalli. Students and staff members from various colleges took the advantage of this camp. The importance of eyes and their care was explained to them by the visiting doctors.
  10. On 4th March 2014, a Road Talk on 'Innovations' by Mr. S. Kumar, Senior Director, Innovation Group, Cognizant Technology Solution was organized. The speaker explained about the innovations in various fields.
  11. On 27th March 2014, a National Workshop on 'Research Issues in Big Data Analytics' (first of its kind in Tiruchirappalli) was organized. Mr. A. K. A. Rahmaan, Hon'ble Second Additional District Judge, Tiruchirappalli inaugurated the workshop.Dr. T. Arun Kumar, Director, School of Computing, VIT University, Vellore and his team conducted the workshop. The workshop consisted of 4 sessions. In Session-1, basics aspects of big data analytics were discussed. Session-2 dealt with the research issues of big-data analytics. In Session-3, Hadoop and implementation aspects were covered. The entire Session-4 was devoted to the MapReduce programming model. The workshop received an overwhelming response, in which about 150 participants comprising of research scholars, faculty members, and students from various parts of Tamil Nadu attended and derived benefits.

3. At Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli:
  1. Activities for the year 2013-2014 at Jamal Mohamed College, was inaugurated by Prof. S. T. Rajan, Head, Department of Computer Science, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli on 31st July 2013. The speaker spoke on the benefits of the co-curricular activities conducted under the banner of Computer Science Association and the CSI. He greatly emphasized on the importance of data structures for good programming.
  2. Mr. R. Rajesh, Technical Trainer & Ad-Film Maker, PC Media Lab, Tiruchirappalli gave a presentation and demo on 'Animation & Graphics Designing' on 3rd September 2013 at 03.00 p.m. for the MCA and M.Sc. Computer students of the afternoon shift.
  3. Mr. V.M. Samsudeen of Final year MCA gave a lecture on 'Internet Basics' for the First and Second Year students of B.Sc. (Computer Science) on 18th September 2013 at 03.00 p.m.
  4. The Department of Computer Science of Jamal Mohamed College in association with CSI Tiruchirappalli Chapter organized an Inter-Collegiate Technical Symposium - SWAP 2K13 on 7th & 8th October 2013. Mr. Ameer Faisal, Project Manager, Tata Consultancy Services, Bangalore inaugurated the symposium.
    The events like Animation, Code Conversion, Debugging, Extempore, IT Marketing, Quiz, Stress Management, Treasure Hunt, Web Designing and Word Hunt were conducted on these two days. Around 226 students from 35 Arts, Science & Engineering colleges and universities, participated in various events.
    Mr. Gokul Visweswaran, an illustrious alumnus, Director, Effect Works, Chennai delivered the valedictory address and distributed the prizes & certificates. The students of New College, Chennai bagged the overall championship.
  5. Mr. J. Ashik Shah, Managing Director, Vidura Placement & Training Academy, Bangalore delivered a 'Placement Talk' on 22nd October 2013 at 09.30 a.m. Final year PG students attended the programme.
  6. Mr. A. Younus Parvez, USA delivered a talk on Technology Trends and Career Planning on 16th December 2013. In his talk, he discussed about the latest technology trends in IT.
  7. Dr. M. Nazreen Banu, Professor, Department of MCA, MAM college of Engineering, Tiruchirapalli delivered a special lecture on' Grid vs Cloud Computing - A Star Experience' on 19th December 2013.
  8. Mr. M. Abdul Malick Senior Digital Marketing Expert, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Chennai conducted an awareness programme on "Digital Media" on 4th January 2014 at 10.00 a.m. PG students attended the programme and derived benefits.
  9. Mr. J. Ashik Shah, Managing Director, Vidura Placement & Training Academy, Bangalore delivered a 'Placement Talk' on 4th January 2014 at 3.30 p.m. Final year PG students of the afternoon shift attended the programme. The speaker greatly emphasized on the technical and non-technical skills to be developed by the students to get better placements.
  10. Mr. R. Rajesh, Technical Trainer & Ad-Film Maker, PC Media Lab, Trichy gave a presentation and demo on"Animation & Graphics Designing" on 6th January 2014 at 03.00 p.m. for the PG women students of the afternoon shift.
  11. Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli in association with the CSI Tiruchirappalli Chapter organized an Inter-Collegiate Technical Symposium, VARIT-2K14, for under graduate students of arts, science and engineering colleges of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli on 9th January 2014. An illustrious alumnus of the college, Mr. N. Sadiq Ali, Director, Institute of Business Studies, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, inaugurated the proceedings. To commemorate the occasion of VARIT 2K14, a souvenir was released by the chief guest.
    The students from about 30 Arts, Science & Engineering Colleges participated in the symposium in which events like Bug-Fix, Cyber Art, Mind Bogglers, Ad-Mania, and Hardware Blending were conducted.
    Another illustrious alumnus of the college, Mr. R. Shabir Ahamed, Chairman, Rahman Group of Business Ventures & Varicom IMPLEX, Tiruchirapalli delivered the valedictory address and distributed the prizes and certificates to the winners.
    The students of Saranathan College of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli won the overall championship and the students of Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, Tiruchirappalli won the second place.
  12. An inter-departmental quiz programme was conducted on 28th January 2014 for the UG students of the Departments of Computer Science, Computer Application and Information Technology. The contest was conducted for the I, II and III year students separately. Around 80 teams participated in the programme. Online Prelims were conducted and out of the participating teams 5 teams were selected in each category. Finals were conducted for each category separately on stage. A winner team and a runner team were selected in each category.
  13. A Two-Day Workshop on Research Methodology in Computer Science was organized for the benefit of M.Phil. scholars and PG students on 2nd & 3rd March 2014. Dr. A.M. Mohamed Sindhasha, Principal, inaugurated the workshop.
    On the first day, Mr. K. R. Sekar and Mr. J. Sethuraman (Assistant Professors, School of Computing, Sastra University, Vallam) gave a lecture-cum-demo on 'Data Mining Techniques using Weka Software.
    On the second day, Ms. J. Premalatha and Mr. Ifjaz Ahamed (Full-Time Research Scholars, School of Computing, Sastra University, Vallam) gave a lecture-cum-demo on 'Image Processing through Soft Computing Techniques using MATLAB'
    At the end of the second day, Dr. A. K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, Secretary & Correspondent delivered the valedictory address & distributed the certificates to the participants. The success of the workshop was evident from the feedback of the participants.
  14. On 4th March 2014, Mr. S. Kumar, Senior Director, Innovation Group, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Chennai gave a special talk on 'Innovations in IT'. He was here to brief about the National level competition on Innovations in IT conducted by CTS. The students had a great time interacting with the speaker.
  15. A special lecture on 'Pervasive Computing' was given by Mr. H. Karamath Ali, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Periyar E.V.R College, Tiruchirappalli, on 10th March 2014.
  16. Dr. Caldwel Newton, Department of Computer Science, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli gave a special lecture on 'Mobile Networks' on 11th March 2014.
  17. Mr. K. Muthuramalingam, Assistant Professor, School of Computer Science & Engineering, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli delivered a talk on 'Wireless Sensor Networks' on 12th March 2014.
  18. Mr. C. Balakrishnan, Department of Computer Science, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli gave a special lecture on 'No SQL' on 13th March 2014 at 10.00 a.m.
  19. Ms. S. Shakila, Department of Computer Science, Government Arts College, Tiruchirappalli delivered a lecture on 'Anonymous Communication' on 13th March 2014 at 3.00 pm. for the PG students of the afternoon shift.
  20. Ms. J. Sai Geetha, Department of Computer Science, Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti gave a talk on 'Network Security' on 14th March 2014.
  21. Ms. T. Kokilavani, Department of Computer Science, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli gave a lecture on 'Evolution of Distributed Computing' on 17th March 2014..
  22. Dr. R. Baskaran, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Anna University, Chennai delivered a special lecture on 'Data Mining and Cognitive Science' through Video Conferencing on 18th March 2014 at 10.30 a.m..
  23. Dr. T.N. Ravi, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Periyar E.V.R College, Tiruchirappalli gave a special talk on 'Grid Computing' on 18th March 2014 at 3.30 p.m. for the PG students of the afternoon shift.
  24. Mr. A. Zakir Hussain, Chief Technology Officer, Technozyme, Tiruchirappalli gave a lecture on 'Recent Trends in IT' on 19th March 2014. He gave a clear picture of the current job trends in the field of IT.
  25. Mrs. S. Kalaivani, Project Co-ordinator, Bharathidasan University Technology Park, Tiruchirappalli delivered a lecture on 'Open Source Technology' on 20th March 2014.

4. At M.A.M. College of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli:
  1. A One Day Refresher Workshop was organized on 1st June 2013. The workshop was conducted by the experts from Infosys Technologies, Chennai. A batch of 15 faculty members from the Department of CSE participated in the workshop.
  2. Mr. A. Jahir Husain, Associate Professor, Department of CSE gave an Orientation programme on 'Free Open Source Software' for the second year CSE students of MAMCE on 3rd July 2013.
  3. The Department of CSE has organized a Seminar on 'Computer Networks' for the students of MAM Polytechnic College, Tiruchirappalli on 5th and 8th July 2013. The Resource Person was Mrs. C. Aparna, Associate Professor in CSE, MAMCE.
  4. The Department of CSE has organized an Orientation Programme on 'Free Open Source Software' on 8th July 2013. About 25 students from RSK higher Secondary School, Kailasapuram participated. The Resource Person was Mr. A. Jahir Husain, Associate Professor in CSE, Resource Center Coordinator, Spoken Tutorial Projects, MAMCE
  5. The Department of CSE has organized a seminar on 'Middleware Technology' on 8th & 9th July 2013. The Resource Person was Mr. S. Vinayaga Moorthy, Assistant Professor in IT, AVC College of Engineering, Mayiladuthurai.
  6. A Guest Lecture on 'Data Structures' was organized by the Department of CSE on 11th July 2013. Dr. A. Vadivel, Professor of Computer Applications, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli delivered the lecture.
  7. Dr. A. Maluk Mohamed, Professor & Principal, MAM College of Engineering gave a special lecture on 'Distributed Systems' on 15th July 2013 in the Department of CSE.
  8. The Department of CSE organized a One-day ESDM (Electronic System Design and Manufacturing) workshop on 8.11.2013. A sum of Rs.24,000/- was granted by CSI for the conduct of the workshop. A batch of 50 students from the first year participated in the workshop. Four sessions were held during the workshop. Session-1 was handled by Mr. I. Jerald, Managing Director, J. R. Communications & Power Controls, Tiruchirappalli. The topic was 'PCB Design for Inverter Controls'. Session-2 was on the topic 'Digital System Design using FSM from the Specifications'. The Resource Person was Mr. Shriram, Assistant Professor in ECE, MAM College of Engineering. The topic for Session-3 was 'Building Circuits using Electronic Components & Testing'. Mr. Muthu Kumar, Assistant Professor in ECE, MAM College of Engineering conducted the session. In the Session-4, the participants were directly taken to J. R. Communications & Power Controls and PCB design for inverters was demonstrated by Mr. Rajendran, General Manager, J.R Communications & Power Controls, Tiruchirapalli.
  9. A special Orientation Programme on "Cognitive Science - Core and Applications"s, was organized for the faculty members of CSE on 19th December 2013. Dr. A. Vadivel, Associate Professor of Computer Application, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli and Mrs. P. Shanthi, Research Scholar and Associate Professor of CSE, MAMCE conducted the programme.
  10. A Programming contest in C was conducted for the second year students on 16th December 2013. Many students participated in the contest. Prizes were given to the winner and runner.
  11. A Seminar on 'Fundamentals of Networks' was organized for the II and III year students of CSE on 18th December 2013. The Resource Person was Dr. S. Selva Kumar, Professor of CSE, NIT, Tiruchirappalli.
  12. A Winter School Contest was organized on 12th December 2013 for II and III year students, and on 23rd December 2013 for IV year students. The events such Tec Quiz, GD, Tech Dumb C and Programming Contest were conducted. Cash awards were given to the winners and runners. Certificates were given to all the participants.
  13. A One Day Seminar on 'Effective Leadership' was organized by Infosys Ltd. in the Department of CSE on 28th December 2013. Mr. George Koshi, Lead Education and Development, Infosys, Chennai spoke on the topic.
  14. A Seminar on 'Campus Beyond Success' was conducted on 7th January 2014. The Resource Person was Mr. Suganth, Business Head, HCL Technologies, Noida. The final year CSE students of MAMCE, MAMCET, and MAMSE participated in the seminar and derived benefits.
  15. A Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on 'Cloud Infrastructure and Services' was organised by ICTACT in association with Department of CSE from 27th to 31st January 2014. The Resource Persons were Mr. Benhar Charles of ICTACT and Mr. S. Shanmugavel EMC Corporation, Bangalore. 7 internal and 23 external participants attended the programme.
  16. EMC Cloud Certification Day on "Cloud Infrastructure and Services" was held on the 8th February 2014 at Saranathan College Of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli. 7 faculty members attended the certification.
  17. YITP Award 2013, Regional Round of YTTP Award for Region VII was organized by Tiruchirappalli chapter at M.A.M. College of Engineering, Siruganur, Tiruchirappalli on 21st February 2014. 12 nominations from academicians, professionals and consultants were received, Out of them 8 nominations were selected.
  18. A Workshop on 'Information Security Incident Responses' was conducted on 14th March 2014. The Resource Person, Sri. R. Rajagopalan, from EMC, Bangalore motivated the students in the field of information security. He also emphasized on job opportunities available for those who obtain International certifications. He also explained the concepts of antivirus, malware, internet gateway, firewall, proxy , IDS/IPS and APT.
  19. A Workshop on 'Google Apps for EDU' was conducted from 25th to 27th March 2014 for the faculty members. Mr. Jayanth Prakash, Business Executive, Gany Mede Solutions and Google Apps Initiative was the Resource Person. During the workshop the Resource Person discussed about the benefits, use cases, and Case studies on Google apps like: Docs, Forms, Sites, Spreadsheets, Calendar, etc. elaborately. The participants had a useful interaction with the resource person at end of each session.

5. Inter-School Quiz Contest:

An inter-school quiz contest was in association with Sri Jayendra Matric Higher Secondary School, Tiruchirappalli on 7th September 2013. 25 schools participated in this contest. Dr. M.A. Maluk Mohammed, Regional Student Co-ordinator, Computer Society of India and Principal, MAM College of Engineering deliver the Presidential Address. Dr. K. Meena, Past Chairperson, Computer Society of India and Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathdasan Univerity, Tiruchirappalli delivered the valedictory address and distributed the Prizes and Certificates to the winners. The Vidya Seva Ratnam K.Santhanam Rolling Trophy was presented to the winning team. The students of Sri Vageesha Vidhyashram, Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli bagged this trophy. The students of Sri Vidya Mandir Matric Hr. Sec. School, Attur Main Road, Thuraiyur and those of Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya, Tiruchirappalli won the second and third prize respectively. The consolation prize went to the students of Sri Vivekananda Matric School, Umar Nagar, Sirudaiyur, Lalgudi. All the other participants were also honoured with prizes and certificates. Dr. Gopinath Ganapathy, Chairman, Computer Society of India, Tiruchirappalli Chapter and Director, Bharathidasan University Technology Park (BUTP), Shri. S. Kunjithapatham, Secretary, Sri Jayenda Matric Hr. Sec. School and Prof. G. Balakrishnan, Quiz Master and Retd. Vice-Principal, St. Joseph's College offered felicitations


6. National CSI President's Visit:

Our CSI National President, Dr. S.V. Raghavan was here in Tiruchirappalli City on 20th September 2013. We had our MC meeting along with him at Hotel Sangam at 5.00 p.m. During the meeting, the President shared some of his experiences and thoughts regarding various issues related to recent developments and future trends in information technology


7. YITP Award 2013:

YITP Award 2013, Regional Round of YTTP Award for Region VII was organized by Tiruchirappalli Chapter at M.A.M. College of Engineering, Siruganur, Tiruchirappalli on 21st February 2014. 12 nominations from academicians, professionals and consultants were received, Out of them 8 nominations were selected.
